3.1 Communication

“An eye for an will leave everyone blind”

2016_0717_CommunicationImage

The hate has got to stop, you guys.

We are not yet blind, but we need to open our eyes. Prayers help an individual. I understand that. Please pray, if that’s what you do.

I think that the thing that is more important than prayer right now is communication. Communication means the sharing of information, news, ideas and feelings.  Communication also means listening to one another. Listen to your opposition. Try to empathize. That does not mean that you have to agree with them. But please, just take a moment to listen.

I know that we get passionate about our beliefs, our thoughts, our opinions. Passion is a good thing. When passion hits it’s peak, it is an amazing and sometimes terrifying thing to watch. Passion is what inspires people to get something done. It is what gives people purpose. No one expects you to lose your passion.

Compassion, while a similar word, means this: “concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others”.

Concern: To relate to or to worry.
Concern for others = Compassion.

Compassion is what will help us heal.

Without communication, compassion will exist only in small pockets.  That’s not enough.  We ALL need to listen, and we all have a need to feel as though we have been heard.  It’s human nature.  Communicating only after an event puts a band-aid on a bigger issue. A band-aid will not fix this, it’s too deep.  This needs to heal from the inside out. We need to communicate. And keep communicating.  But please, let me remind you that communicating does not mean: “this is my thought, and this why I’m right”. Communication is a conversation. Sometimes it’s good, and sometimes it’s hard.  You may learn something new and you may teach someone something new.    You will, however, exercise compassion in doing do.

Be Patient.

Be Present.

In an me-centric society, be someone with compassion.

A reaction to not only the events of today, and the last month, but all acts of hate we have had to endure as a society. In the United States. In Paris. In Brussels. In Turkey. In Miami. In the Middle East. In Europe. On this earth as a whole.

Please, take time to teach yourself to listen. To have compassion. To compromise. That should occupy enough time that you no longer have time for the hate.

3.0 Balance

bal-ance  /ˈbaləns/ a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions.

2015-09-13-21-11-43

Balance is an extremely difficult task.

Balancing your diet.

Balancing your life.

Balancing on one foot.

I would argue that #2 is by far the most difficult of the three, but also, the most important. Balancing on one foot is not life threatening. Balancing your diet is a luxury that can be purchased. But balancing your life. . .
Damn.  That’s tough.

It is a struggle familiar to most, difficult for many, and essential for all.

Over the last few years, I have attempted to achieve all three. I have certainly had my ups and downs. Without a doubt in my mind, I can say that I am very happy with the balance that I have achieved.  As I was thinking about this today, I thought ‘how did I do this? How did I find it within myself to do this one my own?’ Then it I realized that I didn’t.

I didn’t do it on my own. I have a support system that has built the strongest foundation I could ever hope for; My family, My Friends, My Co-Workers, and yes, even my social networks. All of these people have helped shape who I am.

Then, I thought, I would still really love to have that voice of reason in my life. That person to tell me when I’m being silly. Someone who knows every side of me, and loves me just the same. Then I remembered my sister’s wedding (because: shiny object).  At her rehearsal dinner, she gave me a card saying that we were each other’s yin / yang. I loved that sentiment so much, I added it to my speech for the following day.

2015-09-13-21-24-05

To my sister, Kristen, I realize that you have been there for me my ENTIRE life, and I don’t know that I have ever truly said “Thank you”.

You have been a huge influence on the woman I am today (for better or worse).
You keep me going .
You are my balance, and I just want you to know that I appreciate it.

In addition, I want to address that fact that last week was National Suicide Prevention Week.  This post was partially inspired by this fact.  I have been fortunate enough to have this amazing support to help me whenever I have been down.  I cannot ever put into words how important they are to me.  However, I do know that there can be days that feel as if life is out to get you.  Those days suck. But that’s the thing.  It’s just a day.  Don’t take for granted the fact that tomorrow, you get up and you have another chance to do it again, just better.  Find something in every single day that makes you smile.

Every day, smile one more time than you did the day before.

Repeat this until you smile all damn day.

Find your balance.

2.2 #FramedAtMidPoint – The Results

Opening Night

Opening Night

FRCH Design Worldwide (“FRCH”), recently made the decision to “Brand Themselves”. In order to get buy in from the Public, they reached within their walls and asked for a favor of their employees to support their own personal brand launch.  They challenged us to create a new brand, in the form of a Pop-Up shop, for the upcoming city-wide MidPoint Music Festival (MPMF).

To accomplish this task the employees were given a 24-hour Brainstorming Design Challenge.  All of FRCH came off-line for one day. 180+ people were divided into 8 teams crossing disciplines, studios, and levels (not just designers, but IT and administration as well).

The given guardrails were as follows:

  •   Create a pop-up concept.
  •   Stay within a $15,000 budget.
  •   Capitalize on social media.
  •  Resonate with the Millenial demographic that will frequent MPMF and Over The Rhine (“OTR”)
  •  Provide awareness or support that benefits the community.
  •  Resonate with FRCH’s core values, and brand statement, “See Something New”.
  •  In 24 hours, present the concept to the firm and a panel of judges, including FRCH partners

The judging panel then selected one winning concept to implement in the following month at MPMF.

I was on Team 6, and we devised the concept of “Vinstagram”.   Our concept stripped the essence of social media to its core: sharing images and writing messages.  The theory was that a person can look at something they pass on the street and see it the same way every day, but we could do something to change their perspective.  Inspired by FRCH’s new brand slogan “See Something New”, we wanted to create a gallery that allowed a peak behind someone else’s lense.  Through the utilization of a simple #HashTag, we would print images from Instagram on the back side of a postcard, to display on a curated Gallery Wall.  People who have used the #HashTag would then come to the space not only to find their photo, but to see the festival through another’s eyes.  The hope was that guests would be inspired and purchase these small tokens, and send them to friends, family, or even themselves.  Every postcard that left the space would leave with a $1 donation to an, at the time, unnamed charity that benefited the youth of the community.

After the presentations, the judging panel deliberated for a few days, and Team 6 won!

Team 6 had the following four weeks to refine the concept, complete the design, and build out and implement the Pop-Up experience.

As the concept evolved some minor changes were made, including the name of the shop itself.  Another team from the brainstorm created the name #FramedAtMidpoint.  The name seemed absolutely relevant to the concept, and actually fed the idea even further.  Below is an explanation of why.

The Instagram photo platform is based off of square image, similar to a Polaroid photograph.  Polaroid photographs are a lot of what fed the initial “Vinstagram” concept.   They create a feeling of nostalgia to the ever-digital millennial generation.  They provide instant gratification, in the form of a photo.  They allow the owner space to leave a message or note about the photo.

We decided to create a graphic system of view finders based on the proportions of a Polaroid and communication used on Instagram.  By strategically placing viewfinders around town, we created a sense of guerilla marketing.  Ambassadors carried large 3’ x 4’ frames that translated into a “walking photobooth”.   Light posts created a mounting surface for 11” x 17” viewfinders that framed out shots of different venues in different districts.  Finally, business-sized calling cards were handed out like wild-fire.  All ambassadors were also asked to wear custom designed T-shirts as well.

By putting deeper emphasis on the concept of a Polaroid style image, an instant print became a must.  A photobooth had been discussed in brainstorming, and would now become a design driver.  The booth was placed at the storefront to provide interaction at the face of the store.  In keeping with the concepts of both Polaroid and Instagram, we decided to have a little fun with the filters.  We created custom designed physical acrylic filters that slid into a handmade box in front of the lens of the camera.  This kept our use of new-age technology analog and interactive.

The Outcome:

The results of the experience were outstanding! Not only was the concept well received among the target market, but we were able to successfully raise over $700 for the selected charity, Music Resource Center of Cincinnati (“MRC”).  During the week of the festival, we received 72,000 social media hits.  We broadened the awareness both on social media and through verbal communication for MRC.

We still have a few straggling #FramedAtMidpoint posts.  It’s a happy reminder to me of this awesome experience!

PS. 2.1 (Let’s keep this going!)

Blogging 2.0

I started this blog at 26, days away from 27. I got an idea for the name of a blog. So what did I do? I took action of course.

I asked for “Blogging For Dummies” for by birthday, and my dad bought it for me. I reserved the name. I wrote a post. I put it on the back burner.

As of late, I have been incredibly inspired by people and happenings surrounding me. For the first time in a while I truly feel like I am pushing my limits, and learning again.

So here, at 29 1/2, I write my second post.
Here’s hoping that my next post is not 3.0.

Hello world!

Hello, Hello, Hello!

Welcome to my blog!

I have recently acquired the undying desire to create a blog about what I love, and what inspires me.  I am an interior designer and spend a great deal of time analyzing every space that I encounter.  This blog will pay homage to spaces, places, events, people, objects, and even food, among other things, that inspire me on a daily basis.  If you are reading this, I ask for your patience as I embark on my journey through the blogosphere, and I hope the you check back soon, and often.

Wish me luck, cause here we go . . . .
